"Painting is a unique way, in most cases, to rerouting the signal passages around the damaged area of the brain," Tooley said. "By utilizing art, it helps with problem solving."

Tooley showed a video of some traumatic brain injury patients who explained why they love to paint. They said the art form allows for freedom of expression and provides a creative outlet.

Tooley guided the class as they each painted their own version of a sunset, using the same methods he uses with traumatic brain injury patients at The Resource Center.

The TBI Structured Day Program provides individually designed services and provides in an outpatient setting to improve or maintain skills and abilities to live as independently as possible in the community. Services include computer-based cognitive rehabilitation, creative arts, life skills, social interaction, occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech services. For more information, call 366-8008 or visit www.resourcecenter.com.

Patient-created art is available for sale through The Resource Center. Sales must be artist-approved. Family members can purchase a painting for $35, while non-family members can purchase them for $50. All proceeds directly benefit the program.
