Summer Is Almost Here: Stay Hydrated, Stay Safe

June 2, 2026

As the days grow longer and temperatures begin to rise, it’s important to remember that summer weather brings an increased risk of dehydration and heat-related illnesses. At Venture Forthe, the health and well-being of our clients, caregivers, and community members remain a top priority. Taking simple precautions can help everyone enjoy a safe and healthy summer season.

Why Hydration Matters

Water is essential for nearly every function in the body. Proper hydration helps regulate body temperature, supports digestion, maintains energy levels, and keeps the brain functioning at its best.

Even mild dehydration can cause:

  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Muscle cramps
  • Difficulty concentrating

Older adults are especially vulnerable to dehydration because the body’s ability to recognize thirst can decrease with age. Certain medications and medical conditions may also increase the risk.

Tips for Staying Hydrated

  • Drink water consistently throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Carry a reusable water bottle when traveling or spending time outdoors.
  • Eat water-rich foods such as watermelon, strawberries, cucumbers, oranges, and lettuce.
  • Limit beverages that can contribute to dehydration, including excessive caffeine and sugary drinks.
  • Increase fluid intake when exercising or spending extended periods outside.

Understanding Heat Stroke

Heat stroke is the most serious heat-related illness and occurs when the body can no longer cool itself effectively. It is a medical emergency that requires immediate attention.

Warning Signs of Heat Stroke

Watch for the following symptoms:

  • Body temperature of 103°F (39.4°C) or higher
  • Hot, red, dry, or damp skin
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Headache
  • Dizziness or confusion
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Muscle cramps
  • Fainting or loss of consciousness

What To Do If Someone Shows Signs of Heat Stroke

  1. Move the person to a cool, shaded, or air-conditioned location immediately.
  2. Call 911 or seek emergency medical assistance.
  3. Help cool the person using cold compresses, cool water, or a fan.
  4. If the person is conscious and able to drink safely, offer small sips of water.
  5. Do not leave the person alone until help arrives.

Additional Summer Safety Tips

Beyond staying hydrated, consider these steps to protect yourself during hot weather:

  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Check on older family members, neighbors, and friends during heat waves.
  • Never leave children, older adults, or pets in parked vehicles.

Your Health Matters

At Venture Forthe, we are committed to supporting the health, independence, and well-being of the individuals and families we serve. By staying hydrated and recognizing the signs of heat-related illnesses, we can all enjoy a safer and healthier summer.

Remember: Stay cool. Stay hydrated. Stay safe.
